Castiglione del Lago rests on a small promontory which juts into Lake Trasimeno. It is a fortress town standing inside its walls with three entrances, the medieval fortress (1247),
and the frescoed, fifteenth century Palazzo Ducale built by the Della Corgna family. it
is the main tourist centre on Lake Trasimeno with facilities for swimming and sailing.
Being near the Tuscan border, it is possible to reach other important towns in both
Umbria and Tuscany in a short time: Perugia and Arezzo are just half an hour away by car,
Siena and Assisi not much further, and then there are Pienza, Montepulciano, Todi, Spello,
Spoleto, le Fonti del Clitunno and ‘Le Cascate delle Marmore’ waterfalls.
